Polkadot Hackathon: North America
Subsocial is happy to announce that we are participating in the Polkadot North America Hackathon as a partner sponsor.
We are inviting all hackers to grab a cup of coffee and build on Subsocial! Use your creativity to solve the challenges, and we will take care of the rewards.
It’s time to build, and we are here to mentor you during your journey.
Our founder, Alex Siman, will be one of the hackathon judges, and a few of our developers, Vlad Pro, Oleh Mell, and Tushar Ojha, will be mentors.
If you are interested in participating, check out the full details, and be one of the first 3rd party developers to build on Subsocial.
Below are listed the 4 challenges for the hackathon. None of them require Rust/Substrate experience, as they only involve web development connected to our blockchain’s JS SDK, so don’t let Rust keep you from participating!
Challenges
#1: Create a dapp where a user can enter the URL of a post on Medium, Substack, or Twitter; then the dapp parses the post from that URL and creates a new post on Subsocial. Think of it as a tool for creating backups, where the user can back up their posts from centralized media platforms to Subsocial.
It is required to support at least one of these platforms: Medium, Substack, or Twitter. But the more platforms are supported, the better, and this will result in a higher score given to the solution to this challenge.
Prize: up to 2000 USD.
#2: Create a Substrate Exchange dapp for people to post questions and get responses. Also, create an algorithm for the reputation of the users on the dapp. It should be possible to easily reward the best answers with any Dotsama tokens (for example with DOT, KSM, ACA, SUB, etc.).
Prize: Up to 3000 USD.
#3: Create a decentralized short-form social audio/video dapp on Subsocial. It should have features like posting audio/video clips with captions, like/unlike, and follow/unfollow. Also, create a “For you” list of audio/video clips created by people you follow.
Extra: Build it as a mobile app.
Prize: Up to 3000 USD.
#4: Create an Instagram-like app where people can prove ownership of and post their NFTs with a caption. They should be able to like and comment on each post.
Extra: Implement bio, follow & unfollow functionality.
Prize: Up to 3000 USD.
More information on the bounties can be found on this page.
Registration
You can register for the general hackathon here.
On June 21, 2022, at 5:00 PM UTC, we are holding a workshop for beginners where we will show you how to build a Twitter-like dapp in just 50 minutes. You can register for the session which will be livestreamed on YouTube.
Submission requirements
Everything described in the general hackathon submission requirements, and:
-
Public GitHub repository;
-
comprehensive Readme file on how to use a dapp;
-
the dapp should be deployed so that judges can try it;
-
demo video of the dapp;
-
Usage of Subsocial SDK or blockchain;
-
GPL-3.0 license is preferred.
Technical resources
There are boilerplate template dapps in React, Vue, and Angular that you can use to help you get started.
Being one of the first to build in a new ecosystem always brings benefits like more users and marketing. With this hackathon, you’ll get direct support from our team, and have the opportunity to get paid in cash, so show us what you’ve got!
About Subsocial
Subsocial is a social networking platform built to support the social networks of the future. These apps will feature built-in monetization methods and censorship resistance, where users will own their content and social graphs. Built with Substrate pallets, Subsocial is a one-of-a-kind in the Dotsama ecosystem, and designed specifically for social interactions. These interactions do not have to be specifically social networking, as Subsocial can support apps like YouTube, Shopify, or even Airbnb.
