May 2022 In Review

May was a quiet month, with lots of work going on behind the scenes. Some of that has been announced today, and more will follow.

Teasing Creator Staking

On May 2nd, we put out a short demo showing how creator staking might work. This feature would reward content creators via inflation, and let token holders stake to their favorite creators, earning rewards in return. Stakers would get the same reward regardless of who they staked to, so it would effectively become a vote.

We are still thinking about this feature and it is not yet guaranteed that it will be released.

Getting Started

On May the 4th (be with you), we updated our docs to include a guide on getting started with Subsocial. The guide walks you through how to set up a Polkadot.js account, explains how Substrate features multiple addresses on different chains all attached to the same Substrate account, and then provides a tutorial on how to use our dapp.

Donations On Subsocial

May 13th brought the addition of Subsocial’s first monetization feature: donations. A donation banner can be found at the bottom of every post, and donation buttons are located on every account and space page. Users can donate with a variety of tokens to support their favorite content creators.

Customer Research

Throughout the month of May, members of the Subsocial team talked with 20 power users of Subsocial to get a better understanding of their experience as a creator, and gather feedback on Subsocial’s current state and what they would like to see in the future. A big thank you to everyone so far who has taken the time to talk with us!

About Subsocial

Subsocial is a social networking platform built to support the social networks of the future. These apps will feature built-in monetization methods and censorship resistance, where users will own their content and social graphs. Built with Substrate pallets, Subsocial is a one-of-a-kind in the Dotsama ecosystem, and designed specifically for social interactions. These interactions do not have to be specifically social networking, as Subsocial can support apps like YouTube, Shopify, or even Airbnb.
