Bringing A Web2 Social Experience To Web3

While you may not realize it, there is a glaring problem with the current state of Web3 and its communities. Almost all of Web3’s communication happens on closed Web2 platforms owned by traditional companies, whose best interests are usually not aligned with the goals of the Web3 movement. At best, this does not make sense from a philosophical perspective, and at worst, it poses a major risk to the future of Web3.

Not only does this put your communities at risk, but it also fragments and siloes communications, such as governance discussions. When your favorite blockchain or decentralized project is debating a proposal, discussions are usually split among any number of platforms such as Discord, Twitter, Telegram, and more, which is a net negative for effective discourse.

This issue is easily fixed by moving discussions on-chain, where they are unified in a single place, available to anyone, and immune from the whims of centralized Web2 actors.

Unfortunately, this brings with it many user experience (UX) barriers, such as constantly having to confirm transactions in your wallet, needing a wallet in the first place, and having to obtain a specific token in order to participate in discussions. In fact, these issues are exactly why so many Web3 projects still house their communications on Web2 platforms, despite the drawbacks.

Breaking Down The Barriers

If you want, you can still connect your existing EVM wallet accounts, allowing you to use and display your NFTs, and interact with ERC20 tokens, smart contracts and more. Despite signing in with your wallet, you still will not need tokens, or have to constantly confirm your messages, thanks to Subsocial’s advanced infrastructure.

Until recently, projects have had some good reasons for keeping their discussions locked in Web2, but now, they are free to expand into the next generation of the internet, with no drawbacks.

A Social Web3

Moving communications on-chain unlocks a myriad of uniquely Web3 benefits. Perhaps the most notable is the ability to participate in the same discussions from multiple different dapps, allowing you to choose which UI/UX you like the most. Additionally, discussions can be linked to on-chain entities, accounts, NFTs, etc., enabling open on-chain commentary on anything.

Ultimately, on-chain communication is all about improving the accessibility and flow of information. The silo model of Web2 has restricted data, but Web3 is here to break the walls down, and release an unprecedented flow of information on the internet.
