Announcing PolkaVerse!

Our web app has been rebranded to PolkaVerse! Previously, it was named Subsocial, the same as the Subsocial blockchain, and this led to a lot of confusion and misunderstanding. To remedy that, we have renamed it to PolkaVerse, the number one place to discuss all things Polkadot related.

To date, our web dapp has been live for over two years. It was originally built as an example UI. Without it, users would have had to post through the Polkadot.js extrinsics page, and that really was not a good option. However, due to the web app also being called Subsocial, many were led to believe that our web app was our main product. To get a better understanding of this, imagine if the Uniswap or Aave apps were instead named Ethereum.

Subsocial is the underlying blockchain technology that powers decentralized applications running on top of it, such as PolkaVerse. Thousands of individual dapps can be built, all with different use cases and user experiences.

Though PolkaVerse started as an example app, it has seen lots of improvements lately, most notably our recently released onboarding flow. The text editor has also been improved multiple times, and backend optimization has increased the speed of the application.

Combining those with the energy system, the UX of Subsocial has improved significantly in the last year, and along with improvements to our developer experience, we are now in an excellent spot to foster a strong developer community. These developers will build more applications on top of Subsocial, with alternative user interfaces and experiences.

The post viewer has also received some upgrades. Post titles are now located inside the content block, now with the Polkadot Unbounded font. The bottom blocks have also been updated for more clarity, separating the author’s account from the space containing the post.

To reiterate, PolkaVerse is just one app built on top of Subsocial. Other apps are currently in development, and we plan to participate in more hackathons in the future to incentivize third party developers to build even more applications on Subsocial.

If you’ve never made a post on Subsocial before, now is a great time to get started posting on PolkaVerse! First, get some energy, either by burning SUB or visiting the energy bot in our Discord server. Next, just head on over to PolkaVerse and follow the onboarding process to get situated!

About Subsocial

Subsocial is a social networking platform built to support the social networks of the future. These apps will feature built-in monetization methods and censorship resistance, where users will own their content and social graphs. Built with Substrate pallets, Subsocial is a one-of-a-kind in the Dotsama ecosystem, and designed specifically for social interactions. These interactions do not have to be specifically social networking, as Subsocial can support apps like YouTube, Shopify, or even Airbnb.
